I made buckwheat pancakes. I followed the recipe from the Joy of Cooking.

For Women
When I was at the bookstore yesterday, I picked up a brochure for the latest math and science books released by one publisher because, even though I do not have strong German reading ability, I do have an interest in books about math and science. This duo of books caught my eye:
Left: Mathematical formulas for engineers and scientists. Right: Mathematical formulas for female engineers and scientists.
The “female” one is the same price, and has the same content plus a supplementary section with addresses of organizations, and “Karrieretipps”.
The cover art is ill advised. I know very few (though some) engineers and scientists who would identify with it.
Several questions come to my mind: Who thought of this idea? Who approved the cover art? Why not put the supplementary section in the regular addition? What about other categories of people who may encounter challenges in their career in math and sciences, such as gay or blind people? Does it work?
North of Bernauer
News of a new coffee place made us go just slightly outside of our usual wanderings. This area we never go to corresponds exactly with where Wedding is on the map below.
This tip of the neighbourhood Wedding is quite different from the places we normally spend time, I assume because the Berlin Wall put Wedding in West Berlin. The buildings are taller, but the stories in them are shorter. There is a greater distinction between residential and commercial streets. It just not very cool.
News to me
Today I learned that the song Major Tom is just the English version of a German song by the same performer.

The physical expression of gender
I recently finished reading a book called The Red Queen – Sex and the evolution of human nature, by Matt Ridley.
The first half is a survey of the various theories of why exactly plants and animals would reproduce sexually rather than asexually. That portion of the book builds up the (then-current) scientific knowledge required to later argue that much of human behaviour is a product of evolution driven by sexual reproduction.
I recommend it. It’s somewhat demanding, so take your time reading it. The author builds up complex arguments and sometimes intentionally leads you to incorrect conclusions to prove a contradictory point. He is often succinctly witty.
Botanical Gardens
A visit to the botanical gardens might not be the first idea you’d have for spending a late winter afternoon …
Toronto-style Chicken
Step one: Buy a half of a rotisserie chicken from the local döner hut, also known as a “half chicken”. For only 40 cents extra it comes with an actually tasty salad, so get that too.
Step two: Reach for your jar of imported St Lawrence Market Churrasco Chicken Sauce. This might be hard to source. Your best options is to hire a sauce mule.
Step three: Cover half of the half chicken with sauce (because a whole half chicken is too much for one person)
Step four: Enjoy your chicken by candlelight.
Tori Katsu Dance
fronx and I got silly while waiting for lunch. I made a little loopcam animated gif called “Tori Katsu Dance”. His loopcam gif is called “Laying eyes on someone”.
