AGO

Nadia and I went to see the Picasso show today. It’s the first time I’ve been to the new and improved gallery. It’s schmancy.

Whole Chicken

I finally worked up the courage to attempt to roast a whole chicken (with The Joy nearby). I don’t have a rack so I used crumpled up foil to ensure the chicken was raised off the surface of the roasting dish. I don’t have a baster so used a spoon to scoop up the juices, and burned myself in the process. The Joy recommended covering the chicken with cheesecloth to keep the meat juicy. It worked. But when I removed the cheesecloth it took all the seasoning I had put on the skin with it. Luckily, I had also put seasoning under the skin.

exam prep: eating

This Wednesday I have a 4-hour exam coming up, and I’m nervous. I’m not nervous about the material. What makes me nervous is that I’m not allowed to bring any food into the exam room.

Not eating for 4 hours is generally something that I only do if I’m sleeping. That means that part of my prep over the next few days will be finding and practicing the right food routine to keep me focused and productive from 12:30 to 5 (though I don’t expect I will use the full 4 hours).

Right now I’m leaning toward hot cereal with nuts and fruit for one meal. Maybe some of last night’s quiche will hit the spot, though I would have to make more.

Do you have any suggestions for balanced meals that are light but filling?

Quiche with a potato crust

I was excited when I spotted this recipe over on Treehugger. We get 2 lb of potatoes in our weekly CSA, so any way to use them instead of flour is quite welcome, and I love quiche, but making, chilling, resting, rolling, and pre-baking a crust can require a fair bit of planning ahead, and time.

Tulips

Wandered into the park on a lovely spring day. Saw these beauties.

So I had to make a picture.

Dry rub

I decided my diet did not contain enough animal protein. I don’t really like chicken, but I know that I should limit red meat and fish. So, chicken. While reading about poultry in The Joy, I found a recipe for a dry rub. I used it on chicken thighs, along with a healthy dose of Sriracha, chucked ‘em in the oven, and was pleasantly surprised by tasty chicken!

Equal parts: brown sugar (I ground mine up for an excuse to use my neglected mortar and pestle), black pepper, paprika, and cumin.

Alarming

The fire alarm went off at 5:30am, yanking me from my sleep. I got out of bed and stumbled around dazedly for a few minutes before I understood what I was trying to do. There’s a button I can press that turns off the alarm in my unit (specifically in the bedroom), although it still comes blaring in from the hallway. I turned it off and looked around, thought about what I would need to take with me if I had to leave the building. I made a mental note of things and then went right back to bed. I lay there unable to sleep, but with my brain not fully awake. I wondered if the building really was on fire, were other people getting out of bed and going outside? Would I die in here? After what felt like 20 minutes, but was probably more like 5 or 10, the alarm stopped. There was no announcement over the PA system and I fell back asleep.

In my dream I opened the door to peek into the hallway. It was filled with smoke.
