Last summer, one of the last hydroponic lettuces that we got from our CSA had some teeny tiny leaves left on its rootball when we were done eating it. As an experiment, I planted it in one if the big containers on the balcony, beside the edamame. It grew but quickly bolted. I’ve never seen a lettuce go to seed before.

I wanted to yank the ugly thing so it wouldn’t sap nutrients from the edamame plants, but Mike got protective and wouldn’t let me kill them.

The other day I decided to yank some weeds that were getting very comfortable in the planters, and realized that some of the “weeds” in a number of my planters are actually the progeny of that little rescued lettuce. They make Mike very happy. I’m pretty happy to have free lettuce!
